NFL Chiropractor Uses PEMF To Lower The Inflammatory Threshold

NFL Chiropractor Uses PEMF To Lower The Inflammatory Threshold

Q & A with Dr. Doug Miller former Baltimore Ravens Team Chiropractor

Dr. Doug Miller has traveled the world, speaking about sports-related chiropractic therapy and nutrition.

So to say that he has come across a variety of tools, methods, and philosophies to help athletes — whether they are a pro, college or weekend warriors — deal with injuries would be like saying Michael Jordan was pretty good at basketball.

Both are true and understated.

But there is one thing Miller, who has 25 years of experience as a doctor of chiropractic in his private practice as well as with pro and college sports teams, says practitioners in his line of work need to have.

That would be the PER 2000, a machine developed by Pulsed Energy Technologies that has revolutionized Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) therapy with its high-powered method. Miller has used the PER 2000 since 2013, when he first was given a machine on a tryout basis by Pulsed Energy founder

Miller has used the PER 2000 since 2013, when he first was given a machine on a tryout basis and then purchased one for his private practice, Aligning Wellness.

“I had an interest in (the technology) before they showed it to me,” said Miller, who first learned of the method when he was the team chiropractor for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Miller, who lives and has his own practice in the Baltimore suburb of Catonsville, Md., said it was a scientist from the nearby NASA Goddard Space Flight Center who first exposed him to the benefits of PEMF therapy.

Impacting The Inflammatory Cycle

Baltimore Ravens using PEMF“In my mind, we’re intervening a chronic, inflammatory response on an energetic and cellular level and the results can be fairly instantaneous,” he said.

“Subjective pain responses are decreased (and) mobility is increased immediately after a therapy, which is kind of interesting because you don’t always see that with other modalities.

However, it wasn’t until years later when Pulsed Energy Technologies presented their technology at a Professional Football Chiropractic Society (PFCS) annual meeting that Miller finally decided to utilize the modality.

“You are going to see many degenerative disorders in practice and having a tool that can impact the inflammatory cycle in necessary,” Miller said of the technology, “but if you can lower the inflammatory threshold — which means they’re not perceiving pain — you have a patient for life.

We have many patients who depend on the therapy to manage their chronic disorder. They understand the need to control their inflammation and pain without the need for medications.”

And it is the reason why Miller feels more practitioners should have a PER 2000.

A Necessary Tool For Doctors of Chiropractic

“Is it a tool we should have in our bag? Absolutely,” Miller said.

The technology is relatively unknown, which is why many Miller’s roles haven’t grasped it yet, but Miller does call it “groundbreaking.”

“In my mind, we’re intervening a chronic, inflammatory response on an energetic and cellular level and the results can be fairly instantaneous,” he said.

“Subjective pain responses are decreased (and) mobility is increased immediately after a therapy, which is kind of interesting because you don’t always see that with other modalities.

Do I think it’s a stand-alone (treatment)? No, I don’t think anything is a stand-alone therapy.”

“In my experience, it could potentially could reduce the injury time by a third if used appropriately with other treatment modalities and therapies,”Miller said.

“Which is impressive in sports medicine. This therapy makes our other existing therapies more effective and adds to the tools we have to treat pain and inflammation.”

Miller worked for the Ravens for 18 years — including two Super Bowl championships — as well as the Baltimore Blast when it was a member of the Major Indoor Soccer League and University of Maryland sports teams.

He stepped away from those positions in order to cut down on his travel and focus on his private practice. Miller also has a nutrition-focused business called Creating Wellness.

While his acquisition of the PER 2000 came just shortly before he stepped away from his commitments to the sports teams, his use of the technology has shown how pro and college athletes would benefit.

Getting Back In The Game Faster

“In my experience, it could potentially reduce the injury time by a third if used appropriately with other treatment modalities and therapies,” Miller said. “Which is impressive in sports medicine. This therapy makes our other existing therapies more effective and adds to the tools we have to treat pain and inflammation.”

So why haven’t more athletic trainers from pro teams and college programs tried the Pulsed Energy’s technology?

Ravens chiropractic Pemf“New therapies that are energy-based are new in sports medicine,” Miller said. “I’m not sure allopathic medicine has paid too much attention to these modalities and athletic trainers may not have the background to understand the technology.

You are probably going to find more interest in sports medicine due to the driving need to get athletes back on the field.

I think sports medicine practitioners are willing to look outside of the existing conventional therapeutic protocols and consider modalities that interact energetically with the healing process.”
